Step-By-Step Instructions
Book Information needed: Title of book. Number of pages. Author name. Copyright Date (Found on Title Page). Genre (Comedy, Fantasy, Realistic Fiction, Horror, Action, True Crime etc). Reading Level. Main Character. Setting (Time and Place where story takes place).
POV (Point Of View) = Is this story being told from the 1st person, 3rd person limited, or 3rd person omniscient point of view.
Hint: Check the pronouns. Ex. I, Me, We, He, She, They, etc.
Remember: You need to include SPECIFIC evidence from the book.
Character Traits= Character Traits are words that describe a character.
Hint: Description can be their physical appearance or their personality qualities.
Examples: Tall, Skinny, Short, Hairy, Nice, Mean, Angry, Scared.
Remember: You need 3. You need to include SPECIFIC evidence from the book.
Theme= Theme is the main point or "life lesson" of the story.
Hint: Theme is usually a phrase or short sentence.
Examples: Good conquers Evil. Hard work pays off. Love endures. Nothing worth doing is easy.
Remember: Include if it is directly stated or implied.
Figurative Language= Language used to communicate meanings beyond the literal meanings of the words.
Hint: Look for phrases that are not physically possible being used to describe people, places, or things.
Examples: Raining cats and dogs. Fast as lightning. Big as a house.
Remember: You need to include an example directly from the book.
Characterization= Language used to bring a character to life.
Hint: Very similar to character traits as described from above.
Examples: Looked around nervously. Walked confidently. Heavy-set. Beady-eyed.
Remember: You need one example.
3 New Words= Identify 3 words in the book that you DID NOT know the meaning of before you read this book.
Remember: You must include the context clue (neighboring words and sentences) that help you determine
what the unknown word means.
Context Clues= Words in the story that offer hints at what an unfamiliar word means.
Hint: Clue may be in the same sentence as the unfamiliar word but could also be in the sentence before or after.
Example: The sign in the motel window said "No Occupancy", so I knew there were no rooms available.
"No rooms available" is a clue that Occupancy means the same as room availability.
Remember: You need 3 words and must include their meanings, and the context clue that helped you define
the word.
Conflict= The argument or struggle in the story.
Hint: What is the main character trying to accomplish and what is making it difficult for him/her to do so?
Remember: There often times is more than one. However, one conflict is usually central in a story.
Climax/Turning Point=The part of the story where the outcome is starting to be seen.
Hint: In a murder mystery, the climax is the moment where the murderer is discovered and the mystery is
solved.
Conflict Resolution= The part of the story where the result of the conflict is explained and where loose ends are given closure.
Example: When a murder mystery is solved, what happens to the murderer? How was it solved? What happens
now that the mystery has been solved and the case is closed? Who "Wins" in the story?
3rd-4th Quarter Book Reports
3rd Quarter Due Dates: 1. (Biography/Autobiography)
2. TBD 24 (Informational)
3. TBD (Reader's Choice) Must be Non-fiction.
Purpose: Each student is required to Complete Book Report Forms: Forms can be found in Mrs. Kroll's
3 book reports during each of the 3rd classroom (806), or in Mr. Oelke's classroom. (804) and 4th quarters.

Early Years: Include things that happened in the person's life before they become famous.
Hint: School, Family, Friends
Remember: Include 2 things.
Main Accomplishments: What made this person famous?
Remember: Summarize multiple events.
Describe Personal Goals: What did this person want to achieve?
Hint: Goals may not match achievements.
Remember: Include whether or not they were successful in achieving
their goals. (They may not have but were still successful.)
Your Opinion: What is your opinion?
Hint: What are the ups and downs of this person's life/accomplishments.
Example: The invention of the cell phone has made it much easier for people to
reach one another. However, it has also led to an increase in car
accidents.
Influence: How has this person influenced the world?
Hint: maybe they created something that makes life easier.
Example: The creators of Apple computers have created multiple devices to help
people and businesses become more manageable. Many of them have made
huge donations to health research.
Recommendation: Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Remember: Explain your answer.
4th Quarter Book Reports.
